Femi Kuti, Macy Gray, Roots Manuva, Hugh Masekela and more at Back2Black this weekend
This weekend the Barbican hosts it’s first Back2Black Festival and it’s a serious line up. Held at Old Billingsgate Market from June 29 to July 1 Londoners will be treated to Macy Gray, Marcelo D2, Luiz Melodia, Linton Kwesi Johnson & Dennis Bovell, and Emicida + Rio Baile Funk (29 June); Roots Manuva, Hugh Masekela, Femi Kuti, Fatou Diawara, Criolo, Tono, and Renegado (30 Jun); and Gilberto Gil + special guest, Amadou & Mariam, Toumani Diabaté + Arnaldo, Antunes + Edgard Scandurra, Mart’nália + Lura, Natasha Llerena + Aline Frazão (1 Jul).
Back2Black originated in Brazil in 2009 and one of the leading cultural festivals in the country and celebrates music and art through encouraging Brazilians to reconnect with their African roots.
The London edition of Back2Black brings together a fusion of Samba, Jazz, Funk, R’n’B, Blues, Rock, Reggae, Dub and Hip Hop and if that’s not enough there will be an African market, and visitors can also sample the delights of African and Brazilian food and drink.
