Following up from our “Gist Pages” in our launch issue, Genevieve Nnaji MFR, acclaimed actress has just announced that she will star alongside Chiwetel Ejiofor, Thandie Newton and Anika Noni Rose in the adaptation of Half of A Yellow Sun written by award winning novelist Chiamanda Ngozi Adichie.
Nigerian born Nnaji won the role to play Ms Adebayo, a professor who develops a flirtatious relationship with her colleague Mr Odenigbo (Ejiofor).
It has also been announced that John Boyega, a British-Nigerian actor best known for his role in movie “Attack The Block” will be part of the star studded cast. He will play the role of Ugwu, a young houseboy.
The Orange Prize for fiction award winner is set during the Nigerian-Biafran War (1967-1970). It explores the impact of this conflict through the twisting story of University Professor (Ejiofor) his lover(Newton) her siser, a british expat and a young houseboy (Boyega)
Half of A Yellow Sun is produced by BAFTA winning producer Andrea Calderwood, who also produced The Last King of Scotland and Gail Egan who drew Oscar acclaims with The Constant Gardener. Biyi Bandele, Nigerian Playwright who has had a number of successes on the London stage including his adaptation of post-colonial novel by Chinua Achebe ‘Things Fall Apart’ will be making his directional debut with this project. Yewande Sadiku and Muhta Bakare of Shareman Media are both executive producers of the movie. Filming will commence next month in Nigeria and is scheduled for a 2013 release.
